Latvian President Taps Opposition MP to Form New Government

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has entrusted opposition MP Andris Kulbergs with the task of forming a new government. The prime minister-designate must now win the support of parliament, which will vote not only on his appointment but also on the composition of the next cabinet.

Kulbergs enters the political foreground at a time when Latvia is facing growing pressure on both security and economic fronts. It is not yet clear how much support he commands among the various parties or whether he will be able to form a stable majority.

President Rinkevics did not elaborate on the reasons for his selection but is expected to push for swift coalition negotiations. The outcome of the parliamentary vote may significantly influence the country's future direction on defense, relations with Russia and European policy.
