Germany Calls Turkey Key Partner on Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Turkey could play a significant role in shaping developments in both the war in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran.
During a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Berlin, Wadephul said Ankara has a strong influence over regional security because of its geographical position and its political and economic importance.
Wadephul also called for closer strategic relations between the European Union and Turkey. He said Germany supports greater Turkish involvement in shaping European defence and industrial policy.
The German foreign minister added that Berlin remains open to Turkey eventually joining the European Union. However, he stressed that Ankara must fulfil all conditions required for EU membership.
