Trump Gave Karoline Leavitt the Podium and She Owned It
Donald Trump entrusted a 27-year-old mother with one of Washington's most unforgiving jobs and gave her the freedom to make it her own. Karoline Leavitt did it spectacularly well. Her decision to put her children first deserves the same respect.
"Where's Karoline? Where's my superstar?" Donald Trump asked one afternoon in the summer of 2025, scanning the crowded White House briefing room for his press secretary. Leavitt emerged and took her place at his side. Trump wanted to know whether she had ever seen a bigger crowd of journalists. She said no, then added, with characteristic wit, that this was probably why the White House needed the ballroom he was planning. It was with this small scene that the Wall Street Journal opened its farewell profile of her.
The anecdote captures the dynamic between the two rather well. Trump made Leavitt, at just 27, the youngest press secretary in White House history, and he did not hand her the job in name only. He let her set the tone, choose which reporters to call on and reshape access to the president himself. In a city where experience so often amounts to little more than conformity, that was a remarkable gamble.
At her very first briefing, Leavitt wasted no time announcing that she would restore the 440 press credentials revoked under Joe Biden. She also carved out a place for "new media", throwing open the White House doors to independent journalists, podcasters and digital content producers. No longer would the right to ask the first question automatically belong to the outlets that had, for decades, treated their privileged access as a law of nature.
For much of the Washington press corps, Leavitt carried one decisive flaw from the outset: she spoke for the president they considered the wrong one. Her confidence was accordingly read as arrogance, her sharp tongue as disrespect and her loyalty as evidence that she lacked independence. A male spokesperson displaying the very same traits would, in all likelihood, have simply been praised for his assertiveness.
When a reporter pressed her a second time, despite having already received a clear answer, on whether Trump would tolerate peaceful protests, Leavitt shot back: "What a stupid question." Following a dispute over tariffs, she admitted she regretted ever having called on the Associated Press. And when a HuffPost correspondent asked who had proposed Budapest as the venue for a meeting with Vladimir Putin, her text message reply was blunt: "Your mom did."
Not every one of her answers was diplomatic, and not every defense of the administration was convincing. But Leavitt never once dodged a fight. She understood, instinctively, that a presidential press secretary is not paid to win over the press corps. Before each briefing she prayed with her team, and afterward she strode out and represented Trump with a confidence that officeholders many years her senior have often struggled to muster.
Leavitt had already proven her resilience well before she reached the White House podium. In July 2024 she gave birth to her son, Niko, and just four days later she was back at work, prompted by the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump, she explained afterward, had risked his own life for the election, and returning so quickly felt like the very least she could do in response.
In May 2026 her daughter Viviana arrived, making Leavitt the first press secretary in history to serve while pregnant. Less than two months after giving birth, she was back behind the podium. Now, however, she has concluded that the relentless demands of one of Washington's toughest jobs simply cannot be squared with being the mother her two young children deserve.
Vox, the left-leaning news and explainer site, lost little time framing her departure as proof of a "trap" set by conservative gender roles. One late-night show, meanwhile, mocked her older husband, her use of diapers and even the bra size of her potential successors. A man who chose to step back and spend more time with his children, by contrast, could reasonably expect to be praised for his modern priorities.
Trump, for his part, has publicly respected Leavitt's decision. She remains one of his most trusted outside advisers and is expected to go on wielding real influence within the Republican Party. She departs the White House at the end of August, and from then on her time will belong, above all, to Niko and Viviana, because it was she who chose it that way.
