Venezuela Offers Trump a Model for Greenland

Trump's policy toward Venezuela signals a new type of American expansion. Instead of flags and annexation, we are seeing long-term concessions, capital and control over strategic assets.

US President Donald Trump is taking a step that could fundamentally change not only the global oil market but also the United States’ relationship with Europe. Trump says Washington has secured majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves under an agreement announced on Friday.

The arrangement gives a new US-backed venture long-term rights to develop Venezuelan oil fields, effectively providing the United States with another massive energy base outside its own territory. It is an unprecedented arrangement whose long-term legal viability may still be called into question.

Two Sides of the Coin

But this is not just about oil. Through Venezuela, Trump is also creating another source of leverage over the European Union. The US is already one of Europe’s most important energy suppliers, and its importance has grown significantly following restrictions on Russian imports.

If American companies manage to substantially increase Venezuelan production in the coming years, the US will indirectly control an even larger share of the Western world’s energy supply. This would give the US even greater leverage over the EU in security, energy and finance, adding to Europe’s existing dependence on the dollar-based international financial system.
