Israel controls 40% of Gaza City, offensive expands

According to an army spokesman, Israel currently controls around 40% of Gaza City, while the advance continues. The military operation has displaced more Palestinians, but thousands remain in the destroyed city despite calls to leave.

Health authorities in Gaza reported at least 53 deaths on Thursday from Israeli attacks, mainly in suburban areas. The front line is now advancing to within a few kilometers of the center.

“We continue to put pressure on Hamas' infrastructure. Today we hold 40% of the urban area,” said General Effie Defrin. The operation will be further expanded in the coming days.

The mission will only end “when our hostages are freed and Hamas' rule is over.” According to Defrin, without a “day-after plan,” Israel could take military control of Gaza, which is favored by extreme forces within the government. Complicating matters is that such an operation would require a mandate from the Bundestag.

The offensive has been ongoing since August 10 and, according to Prime Minister Netanyahu, is part of a plan to defeat Hamas in the contested area. International criticism is fierce, particularly because of the humanitarian situation and tensions between the military and politicians.

Many residents refuse to flee. In Tuffah, attacks destroyed several houses, killing eight people and injuring dozens—the civilian population has few places of refuge.
