Tariffs and fentanyl overshadow prospects for Trump-Xi summit in Beijing, reports the FT

China has officially invited US President Donald Trump to Beijing for a summit meeting with President Xi Jinping.

However, the White House has not yet responded, as the two countries remain far apart on both trade issues and the fentanyl issue, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.

The lack of progress in talks between the US and China has reduced the chances of a summit in Beijing and made it more likely that Trump and Xi will instead meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea in October for a lower-profile meeting, the FT said, citing people familiar with the matter.
