Polish Foreign Minister supports no-fly zone over Ukraine
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has sparked a debate about the possibility of a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
As reported by Tagesschau, he stated in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that, following repeated violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones, NATO and the European Union should consider intercepting Russian drones and missiles directly over Ukraine.
In his opinion, it is technically possible for the alliance to carry out such a mission, but a decision can only be made if the allies agree on it.
Sikorski also pointed to the threat posed by the so-called Russian shadow fleet, which transports oil in outdated and technically unsuitable tankers. “Germany or NATO could establish a maritime control zone in the North Sea and thus control the entry of these old ships into the Baltic Sea,” he said.
If even one of these Russian ships, two of which, according to Sikorski, have already sunk in the Sea of Azov, were to end up at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, “we would be faced with an environmental disaster of unimaginable proportions.”
