Spain supports EU plan to use Russian funds for Ukraine

Spain supports the EU plan to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo emphasized that Madrid has long advocated for increased financial aid to Kyiv and is also looking for “creative ways” to include blocked Russian assets.

In his view, innovative approaches must be found to maintain support for Ukraine even under difficult economic conditions.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Spain, as one of the main importers of Russian liquefied natural gas in the EU, is working to reduce this dependence and diversify supplies, for example from the US.

Cuerbo's comments come at a time when the European Commission is stepping up its efforts to use Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense—an issue that divides member states but is increasingly supported by countries such as Spain and the Baltic states.
