Labour Party plans easier access and free visas for top talent

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering abolishing visa fees for top talent from around the world in order to promote economic growth and strengthen the country's position as a center for science and innovation. This was reported by the Financial Times.

The idea is being developed by his “Global Talent Taskforce,” led by Starmer's economic advisor Varun Chandra and Science Minister Patrick Vallance. Among other things, they are discussing a complete waiver of fees for professionals from the five most prestigious universities or for recipients of significant awards.

The debate has gained momentum after Donald Trump's administration announced a drastic increase in fees for US H-1B visas – to the equivalent of more than €85,000. The British Global Talent Visa, which was introduced five years ago, currently costs €879, plus an annual health surcharge of the equivalent of €1,188 per applicant.

The Labour Party has already pledged in its immigration strategy to increase the number of visas for highly skilled applicants.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is also reviewing the tax system and its barriers to the immigration of international professionals.
