France has recognized Palestine. Criticism of Israel is expected.

On Monday, France recognized Palestinian statehood in the UN General Assembly. In doing so, it joined Western allies such as the UK and Canada, which had taken the same historic step on Sunday and were condemned by Israel for doing so.

“We must pave the way for peace,” said the summit's host, French President Emmanuel Macron, to applause at the start of the planned three-hour session at the United Nations. “France recognizes the State of Palestine today,” he added solemnly.

Although this event, convened by France and Saudi Arabia, could boost Palestinian morale in their long-standing quest for statehood, it is not expected to lead to any practical changes.

The recognition of Palestine is expected later at the summit by Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, and San Marino.
