Germany reports victims of Borna virus, experts warn against contact with rodents
In Bavaria, a third person has died from a dangerous infection with the Borna virus. The victim was a 57-year-old man from Regensburg who succumbed to severe encephalitis after several weeks. Writes Focus.
Two other patients from the same region died in the summer. According to the Bavarian Health Office, the virus is transmitted by the tick species Ixodes ricinus – a small insectivorous mammal that can spread the infection through its excrement without becoming ill itself.
The Borna virus causes severe encephalitis, which is almost always fatal. It poses a threat not only to humans, but also to horses, sheep, and other mammals. Isolated cases have also been reported in Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Experts are urging the public to avoid any contact with these mammals. They advise against catching, petting, or touching them with bare hands.
When working in the garden or shed, it is recommended to wear gloves and remove possible food sources such as animal feed or compost. Even though it is a rare infection, its mortality rate is extremely high and, according to doctors, prevention is the only effective protection.
