Judge in Chicago blocks Trump's deployment of the National Guard

A federal court in Chicago has temporarily halted US President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard in Illinois. Judge April Perry pointed out that this would “add fuel to the fire,” as the protests outside the immigration center in Broadview were largely peaceful.

On the same day, however, an appeals court in San Francisco lifted a similar ban in Portland, allowing the Trump administration to expand its deployment there as well.

These decisions could influence the president's broader campaign, in which he speaks of the need for a military response to “left-wing terrorism” but is criticized by leading Democrats. They accuse him of political manipulation—according to the governor of Illinois, there is no evidence of a threat, and Trump is “not a king.”

The White House plans to appeal the decision. Perry's decision remains in effect until October 23.
