Nobel Peace Prize goes to María Corina Machado
The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her courageous fight for democracy in a country that has long suffered under authoritarian rule.
The Nobel Committee praised her steadfast stance in defending civil rights and emphasized that in times when autocrats seize power, defenders of freedom deserve public recognition.
The award, worth 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately one million euros), will be presented on December 10 in Oslo, the anniversary of the death of the prize's founder, Alfred Nobel.
US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that he deserved the prize this year. However, experts said that the White House host would not receive it because he undermines the international order that the Nobel Committee upholds.
