Macron resists calls for resignation – wants to continue ensuring stability

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that he would continue to strive to ensure the stability of the country. In doing so, he ignored repeated calls for his resignation from the opposition in the face of the most serious political crisis in decades.

"Never forget that the mandate given to you by the French people means: serve, serve, and serve. To answer the questions of ordinary French people and to do everything in our power to ensure France's independence,“ Macron told journalists in Egypt, just days after Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was reappointed as head of government.

”That is the only thing that matters. Everything else is up to the government. I will continue to ensure stability," added Macron, whose second and final term ends in 2027.

France experienced an unprecedented situation last Monday: Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, a close confidant of Macron, resigned just hours before his new government was due to meet for its first session.

On Sunday evening, he announced the formation of a new government, which includes several members of previous cabinets, representatives from Macron's centrist camp and his conservative allies, as well as figures from outside politics.
