The European Commission presents four projects to prepare for EU self-defense
The European Commission has presented four defense projects to strengthen Europe's readiness for self-defense by 2030.
The proposed projects include an anti-drone system and a plan to reinforce the Union's eastern border. These proposals are part of a “roadmap” for defense policies that responds to concerns about the war in Ukraine and growing pressure from the US to push Europe toward greater security autonomy.
The EU plans to launch the European Drone Defense Initiative and the Eastern Flank Watch project to improve land, air, and sea surveillance of its eastern borders. Both are scheduled to start by the end of next year, with the anti-drone system expected to be fully operational in 2027 and Eastern Flank Watch at the end of 2028.
Other projects include the European Air Shield to protect against missile and air attacks and the European Defense Space Shield to protect European satellite services. The governments of the 27 EU member states must now decide on their approval.
