Venezuela experiences tensions with the US, Russian aircraft lands in Caracas

A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft linked to the army and the former Wagner mercenary group landed in Caracas, Venezuela, over the weekend. According to Defense News, the aircraft completed a two-day journey from Moscow via Armenia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, and Mauritania.

The Il-76 can carry up to 50 tons of equipment or 200 people. It is operated by Aviacon Zitotrans, a company subject to Western sanctions.

The incident comes amid growing tensions between Venezuela and the US. Washington accuses Caracas of drug trafficking and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group to the region. Venezuela has described the US measures as an attempt to provoke a war.

According to media reports, the flight could indicate Russian support for Venezuela in response to the United States' actions.

In the past, aircraft of this type have transported small arms, military equipment, and even mercenaries. Larger deliveries, such as the S-400 air defense system, would likely require multiple flights.
