AfD co-chairman identifies Poland as a possible threat to Germany
The German AfD party is facing a new wave of criticism following comments made by co-chairman Tino Chrupalla on Markus Lanz's TV show. In it, the politician claimed that "it is possible that Poland could be a threat to Germany".
At the same time, he stated that he did not see any risk of Russian aggression against Germany, and stressed that in theory any country could become a potential security problem.
Chrupalla argued in particular the recent Polish court decision that blocked the extradition of Volodymyr Zhuravlov to Germany. He is suspected of involvement in the attack on the Nord Stream pipeline. According to Chrupalla, Poland is showing a "double standard" and could be as dangerous for Germany as Russia.
He also questioned Russian involvement in recent drone incidents and criticised the German government for failing to provide evidence. NATO expert Florence Gaub argued otherwise, but Chrupalla insisted there were no confirmed facts in Germany.
At the same time, the AfD is facing internal tensions after criticism of MP Rainer Rothfuss's visit to Russia. Co-President Alice Weidel called the decision to travel a mistake and stressed that Rothfuss would "stay at home".
