Netanyahu spoke with Putin by phone about tensions in the Middle East

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed topical Middle East issues by telephone on Saturday. According to a Kremlin statement, the conversation mainly concerned developments in the Gaza Strip, Iran's nuclear programme and the situation in Syria.

The impetus for the conversation came, according to the Israeli statement, from the Russian president.

The Israeli government office said it was the latest in a series of recent contacts between the two leaders, with the calls dealing mainly with regional issues. The Israeli prime minister's office did not give further details on the content of the phone call.
