US plan for Ukraine is neither final nor binding, warns Berlin and Brussels
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the US peace plan for Ukraine as a working document, not a final draft.
According to him, it is a list of points that should be the subject of negotiations between Kiev and Moscow. However, he stressed that Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength and with the strong support of its European partners.
"The German position is also the EU's position," Wadephul said during the meeting in Brussels.
In a similar vein, EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas said any peace plan must be in line with the demands of Ukraine and the Europeans. She warned that without their active involvement, a lasting and just peace cannot be achieved.
The statements of the two leaders underline that real peace will only be possible through an open and balanced dialogue in which Ukraine will have a key role to play.
