DOGE, which was under Musk's thumb, was quietly canceled by the administration
The Office of Government Efficiency, known mainly by the acronym DOGE, was quietly disbanded eight months before the end of its mandate. The agency of Donald Trump's administration was created to cut the budget, bureaucracy and staff of the federal government.
According to federal official Scott Kupor, the agency no longer functions as a centralized entity. Some of its functions have been taken over by the federal government's Office of Human Resources, while other members have transitioned to the new National Design Studio, led by Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. He is in charge of modernizing the visual design of government websites.
DOGE, initially led by Elon Musk, claimed savings in the tens of billions of dollars, but these have never been publicly demonstrated.
Trump's team is also aiming to reform government through artificial intelligence to automate the review of regulations. Yet the goal of reducing staff has disappeared and hiring is once again being allowed.
Meanwhile, Republican-led states, including Idaho and Florida, are creating local entities similar to DOGE.
