Spain will not recognise US intervention in Venezuela, Sánchez declares

Spain will not recognise the United States' intervention in Venezuela, which violates international law, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Saturday after US forces detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a night-time operation.

"Spain does not recognize Maduro's regime. But at the same time, neither will it recognize an intervention that violates international law and moves the region towards a horizon of insecurity and hostility," Sánchez wrote on the X network. Donald Trump previously announced that the US would administer the South American country until a "safe" transition is completed.

Sánchez also called on all parties to "think of the civilian population, respect the UN Charter and create a just and dialogue-based transition."
