Indonesia resumes search for 80 people after landslide

Indonesian authorities have resumed search and rescue operations for 80 missing people after a landslide killed 10 people in a residential area in West Java province.

The landslide on Saturday morning was caused by heavy rains that began the day before and which, according to a warning from the meteorological agency, could continue throughout the week in the province and several other regions.

Dedi Kurniawan, a 36-year-old resident, said it was the first major landslide he had experienced in the village of Pasir Langu in the hilly area of the province, about 100 km southeast of the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

"Sometimes we only have small floods from the nearest river, but this time (the earthquake) came from the forest," he told Reuters.

Rescue workers were hampered on Saturday because unstable terrain and rain prevented them from deploying heavy equipment, Kompas TV reported, citing authorities.
