Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message to US President Donald Trump. According to the Chinese state agency Xinhua, he said that Beijing is ready to cooperate with Washington on "big and good things" in the new year.

At the same time, however, he clearly indicated the boundaries that China considers uncrossable. He was most outspoken on the issue of Taiwan, which he described as the most sensitive point in Sino-US relations, and called on Trump to proceed with extreme caution when selling weapons to the island.

In his words, the US and China should also focus on expanding cooperation where they have common interests.

Despite long-standing disagreements, he expressed his conviction that both countries can find acceptable solutions to their mutual concerns if they proceed pragmatically.
