The number of women with mutilated organs is increasing, influenced by the influx of migrants

According to activists, more than 95,000 women in Italy are victims of female genital mutilation. Various activist associations, such as the Association of Foreign Doctors in Italy and the Euro-Mediterranean Medical Union, drew attention to this on the occasion of the International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation. Ansa reports.

According to them, the phenomenon is on the rise in Europe and is closely linked to the presence of young migrants from regions with a high risk of this practice. It poses a serious challenge to health, social, and child services.

The associations propose the establishment of an International Observatory against Mutilation, which would monitor developments, collect comparable data, analyze clinical and psychological consequences, and coordinate prevention, education, and information programs.

They did not fail to point out that this phenomenon also affects girls and young women in countries that are considered advanced in terms of rights.

In Italy, according to the groups, prevention is weak and uneven, with cases often only coming to light during pregnancy, childbirth, or health complications. The organizations therefore advocate for early intervention involving health care, social services, and schools, as well as systematic training of professionals and cooperation with judicial authorities.

Globally, approximately 230 million women and girls will have undergone female genital mutilation by 2024, a significant increase from an estimated 200 million in 2016.
