Kallas: EU seeks to adopt 20th sanctions package against Russia on Monday

The European Union plans to adopt its 20th package of sanctions against Russia on Monday. The announcement was made by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, following talks in Poland, although ambassadors from member states had recently failed to reach agreement.

According to Kallas, the existing sanctions are having a tangible impact on the Russian economy, and each additional restriction further limits Moscow’s capacity to continue the war against Ukraine. She stressed that pressure on Russia must be sustained and systematic over the long term.

EU foreign ministers are due to meet in Brussels to formally discuss the package.

The new measures are intended as the next step in a broader sanctions regime through which the bloc seeks to respond to the ongoing war and weaken the economic and military capabilities of the Kremlin.
