Hungary poll shows Magyar 11 points ahead of Orbán

According to the latest Medián poll published by hvg.hu, Péter Magyar’s opposition party Tisza is consolidating its lead over Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz.

If elections were held at the end of February, Tisza would secure 42 per cent of the vote, compared with 31 per cent for Fidesz. Among decided voters, the gap is even wider – 55 to 35 in favour of the opposition.

Compared with January, Magyar’s party has gained two points, while Orbán’s has lost two.

Fidesz appears to have been damaged by the scandal surrounding the Samsung SDI plant in Göd, where information about the handling of carcinogenic substances was allegedly kept secret.

Political scientist Gábor Török has suggested that, if the figures are confirmed, the outcome of the election is virtually a foregone conclusion. At the same time, however, he notes that Hungary’s electoral system is highly complex and that the result may ultimately be decided in 106 single-member constituencies.
