Iran denies firing missile at Turkey
On Thursday, Iran accused the United States of attacking its military frigate Dena, which was in international waters off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the ship, which had approximately 130 sailors on board and was a guest of the Indian Navy, was hit by a US submarine without prior warning.
‘The United States will bitterly regret this precedent,’ Araghchi wrote on the social network X. According to him, the incident took place thousands of kilometres from the Persian Gulf.
At the same time, the Iranian armed forces denied in a statement published by state media that they had fired a missile towards Turkish territory and emphasised that they respect Turkey’s sovereignty.
However, the Turkish Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday that a ballistic missile fired from Iran had been heading towards Turkish airspace after flying over Syria and Iraq. According to Ankara, it was destroyed over the eastern Mediterranean by NATO air and missile defence systems.
