Israel to target Iran’s underground missile sites
The conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran has entered its second week. According to the Israeli army, the first phase of the operation succeeded in destroying hundreds of Iranian surface-to-surface missile launchers capable of threatening Israeli cities.
The second phase is expected to focus on bunkers and underground infrastructure where missiles and military equipment are hidden, according to two sources familiar with Israeli military plans.
Iran’s ability to carry out missile attacks against Israel and its allies is a primary target of the operation, the sources said. On Thursday, the Israeli army reported that its air force had struck underground facilities used to store ballistic missiles overnight.
Since the start of the operation, Israeli fighter jets have been flying almost continuously over Iran and Lebanon. In some cases, the same aircraft struck targets in Iran before hitting positions of the Lebanese Hezbollah.
According to Israeli and US officials, the number of missile and drone attacks from Iran has decreased in recent days. Analysts warn, however, that Tehran may be conserving its stockpiles for a longer conflict. Estimates suggest that Iran possessed between 2,500 and 6,000 ballistic missiles before the war.
