Israeli air strikes in Iran larger than US expected

According to Axios, Israel’s air strikes on around 30 fuel depots in Iran on Saturday were more extensive than the United States had expected based on previously announced plans. According to the portal, this represents the first significant disagreement between Washington and Tel Aviv since the start of the war against Iran more than a week ago.

The Israeli air force attacks caused extensive fires in Tehran, which were visible for miles and enveloped the city in thick black smoke. The Israeli army said the Iranian regime also uses the targeted depots to supply its military units with fuel.

An Israeli military official also said the strikes were intended as a warning to Tehran to stop attacks on Israeli civilian infrastructure. Israel informed the United States in advance of the planned air strikes, but according to a senior US official the actual scale of the attacks took Washington by surprise.

According to Axios, the United States fears that attacks on infrastructure used by civilians could have the opposite effect and strengthen support for the Iranian regime. US officials also warn that images of burning depots could unsettle oil markets and contribute to higher prices.

Iran has warned that continued attacks on its oil infrastructure could trigger similar strikes against countries in the region.
