Porn sites block Australians, VPN downloads surge

Australians began downloading VPN apps, which allow users to mask their online location, after the country introduced new age-verification rules.

According to analytics company Apptopia, VPN downloads nearly tripled to almost 29,000 the day before the law took effect. At the same time, the number of VPN sessions also rose significantly.

The new legislation requires websites, apps and artificial intelligence services to prevent minors from accessing content such as pornography, extreme violence or material promoting self-harm.

Companies face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million for violating the rules.

The Canadian company Aylo, which owns Pornhub, responded by blocking some of its sites for Australian users.

Critics argue that the measures are ineffective and could encourage people to circumvent the rules through VPNs. However, according to Digital Rights Watch, the increased interest in VPNs also reflects a growing awareness of online privacy.
