Russia to restart of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant under Rosatom

Russia plans to restart the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant once the security situation improves and operate it under the control of the state-owned company Rosatom. This was stated by the company’s head, Alexei Likhachev, following a meeting with Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He also indicated that, under certain conditions, Moscow could negotiate electricity supplies from the plant to Ukraine.

The facility, which has six reactors, has been shut down since the start of the war, with the reactors maintained in cooling mode. According to Rosatom, preparations are under way for their gradual restart once the security situation permits. Russia has already issued operating licences for two units, and additional approvals are being prepared.

The future of the plant is one of the key issues in peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. According to President Donald Trump, the United States is also considering the possibility of American participation in the management of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including the Zaporizhzhia facility.
