Meta may cut up to 20 per cent of workforce
Meta is planning extensive layoffs that could affect 20 per cent or more of its workforce, three sources familiar with the company’s plans told Reuters. The final scope and timing of the layoffs have not yet been determined.
According to the sources, senior executives have already instructed some managers to begin preparing plans for staff reductions. No timeline has been set for the cuts, and their scale has not been definitively determined.
Meta had approximately 79,000 employees at the end of last year.
The company aims to offset the high costs of building infrastructure for artificial intelligence while preparing for greater efficiency through the use of AI. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has recently been pushing for the expansion of generative artificial intelligence development.
Meta plans to invest approximately $600 billion in the construction of data centres by 2028. Other major technology companies have also announced similar workforce reductions this year.
