UK and allies plan joint defence spending to boost security

The United Kingdom, Finland and the Netherlands are considering joint financing and procurement of weapons, ammunition and military equipment in response to growing global security threats, particularly those linked to the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

The three countries, together with other as yet unnamed partners, are exploring the creation of a new mechanism by 2027 aimed at accelerating defence investment and boosting demand for military equipment. According to the British government, the initiative is intended to complement existing NATO and European Union programmes.

The announcement comes as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is due to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London, with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte also expected to attend.

Dutch finance minister Eelco Heinen said a joint approach would deliver greater security using the same resources while strengthening alliances. British chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasised the need for closer cooperation with allies and for strengthening the domestic defence industry.

London is also signalling a broader effort to deepen ties with the European Union, with joint defence projects seen as a way to improve both spending efficiency and military interoperability.
