Trump’s Peace Council offers Hamas disarmament plan
Trump’s Peace Council has handed Hamas a written proposal to disarm, two sources told Reuters. The proposal was presented to Hamas during negotiations in Cairo last week. Gaza envoy Nickolay Mladenov and US adviser Aryeh Lightstone also attended the meetings.
The plan follows a broader agreement on the future of the Gaza Strip, under which Israeli forces would withdraw from the territory and reconstruction would begin in exchange for the complete disarmament of Hamas. However, the movement has long rejected such a step. Mladenov said the proposal was already on the table and that Hamas and other armed groups must give up their weapons entirely and without exception.
According to US officials, the deal could also offer Hamas amnesty and investment in Gaza’s reconstruction. Hamas, however, fears its members could face attacks from rival militias after laying down their weapons.
Negotiations have been stalled by the US–Israeli war with Iran. The situation is further complicated by the continued presence of Israeli forces in parts of Gaza. It also remains unclear whether Israel would agree to the terms of such a deal.
