Israeli minister calls for Lebanon border to reach Litani River

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has said Israel should extend its border with Lebanon to the Litani River, a position that goes beyond official government policy.

The remarks come amid continued Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, where the army says it is targeting Hezbollah positions and infrastructure. Bridges and other facilities have been hit, and residential areas have also been affected.

The conflict escalated in early March following rocket attacks by Hezbollah on Israel. Israeli forces have since called on residents in parts of the south to evacuate, citing security concerns.

According to Lebanese authorities, the fighting has caused more than a thousand casualties and displaced more than a million people.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately comment on Smotrich’s remarks. Previous statements by Israeli officials have focused on pushing Hezbollah forces away from the border rather than redrawing it.

The Israeli army says its operations are aimed at protecting communities in the north. Lebanon, meanwhile, has signalled openness to negotiations and is facing growing international pressure to contain the conflict.
