Ukraine turns to Mozambique for gas supplies
Ukraine is seeking alternative gas supplies, with Mozambique emerging as a potential partner. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after talks with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo that Kyiv was interested in importing liquefied natural gas, as domestic production can no longer meet demand after years of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to available data, the country has lost about half of its domestic output. At the same time, the talks go beyond energy. Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine could offer Mozambique expertise and technology to strengthen internal security, as the African country faces an Islamist insurgency.
Mozambique is a major gas producer and could further strengthen its export position following the resumption of a large LNG project led by TotalEnergies.
Kyiv, meanwhile, is building up reserves for the next heating season and expects to have at least 13 billion cubic metres of gas in underground storage by the winter of 2026–27.
