G7 meeting seeks US clarity on Ukraine and Iran

G7 foreign ministers are meeting in France at a time of rising geopolitical tensions driven by the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The talks are overshadowed by growing uncertainty over US policy under President Donald Trump, which European allies view as increasingly unpredictable. Diplomats say Washington’s lack of a clear strategy – particularly in the conflict with Iran – is fuelling fears of further destabilisation.

European countries are seeking clearer answers from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, especially on military operations and the prospects for a diplomatic solution. At the same time, they stress the need for continued support for Ukraine and warn against pressure for an unfavourable peace agreement with Russia.

The discussions will also cover energy security, as Iran has restricted the vital Strait of Hormuz.
