US calls for Belarus fertiliser transit through Lithuania

US special envoy John Coale has urged Lithuania to resume dialogue with Belarus, stressing the importance of Belarusian potash fertilisers for international trade. He said allowing their transit through Lithuania would open access to both European and US markets.

In an interview with LRT, Coale said he had discussed the issue with US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, who, he added, confirmed that Belarusian fertilisers would be highly beneficial to the United States.

He also stressed that Washington prefers direct dialogue. ‘President Trump and I do not believe in preconditions,’ he said.

During the interview, Coale repeatedly called on Lithuania to agree to bilateral talks with Belarus at the level of deputy foreign ministers. According to him, it is necessary to remove obstacles hindering normal relations and cooperation between the countries.

Coale said the proposed dialogue could lead to the restoration of trade relations not only between Lithuania and Belarus, but also with Europe and the United States.

He added that the aim is to create conditions for reopening trade flows, including fertiliser exports, which could bring significant benefits to the US economy.
