Trump considers renaming Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump is, according to New York Post sources, considering renaming the Strait of Hormuz the ‘American Strait’ or even after himself, should the United States gain control of the waterway.
The proposal is linked to efforts to weaken Iran’s influence over one of the world’s most important sea lanes, through which a significant share of global oil trade passes.
Trump is reportedly frustrated by the lack of support from allies and is also considering military options, including the deployment of US forces in the region. At the same time, diplomatic negotiations with Tehran are ongoing but have yet to produce significant progress.
The idea of renaming the strait has prompted mixed reactions, ranging from support among his backers to criticism that it is a tawdry gesture with political implications.
Notably, the debate was also fuelled by a viral – but apparently fake – social media post.
