EU chief raises Hormuz security and civilian toll in call with Iran

European Council President António Costa said he had urged Iran to pursue diplomacy and respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz during a telephone call with President Massoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

Costa said it was vital that Iran help reduce regional tensions and comply with its international obligations. He also condemned what he described as ‘unacceptable attacks’ on countries in the region.

‘I called for de-escalation and restraint, the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the need for all parties to fully respect international law,’ he wrote on X.

He emphasised the humanitarian toll of the conflict and expressed regret over the loss of life. ‘The loss of innocent lives, including the attack on a school in Minab, is deeply regrettable,’ he added.
