Russia targets students with incentives to boost drone forces

Russia has launched a new recruitment campaign aimed at university students, seeking to enlist them in drone units deployed in Ukraine.

Universities across the country are offering substantial incentives, including financial packages reportedly worth several million roubles a year, as well as bonuses, accommodation and tuition fee waivers. Students are also promised the option to return to their studies after completing a year of service.

The move reflects Moscow’s growing focus on technically skilled personnel, as drones play an increasingly central role in modern warfare.

At the same time, the campaign does not amount to a general mobilisation. Russian authorities maintain that there is no shortage of volunteers.

In parallel, officials are introducing quotas requiring companies to provide additional recruits.
