Court overturns Bannon conviction

The US Supreme Court has allowed the Justice Department to proceed with steps towards dismissing criminal charges against Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former strategist. The justices overturned a lower court decision that upheld his 2022 conviction for contempt of Congress and remanded the case for further consideration.

Bannon was found guilty on two counts in the indictment for refusing to turn over documents and testify before a congressional committee investigating the 6 January 2021 attack on Capitol Hill. The Justice Department now argues that dismissing the case is ‘in the interest of justice’ and has already filed a motion to do so.

In its decision, the Supreme Court took the motion under advisement and ordered the lower court to review the case again. Bannon has already served a four-month prison sentence, imposed after an appeals court upheld his conviction in 2024.

As a key adviser to Trump’s 2016 campaign and later White House chief strategist, Bannon was a prominent figure in US politics. He has faced other legal challenges in the past, including a fraud case to which he pleaded guilty in 2025.
