Iran cuts diplomatic ties with US after Trump threat
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply following Donald Trump’s ultimatum demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The US president also warned of ‘disastrous consequences’, speaking of the ‘destruction of civilisation’ if Tehran did not comply.
Iran responded by limiting diplomatic contacts with Washington and, according to several sources, cutting off direct communication.
However, negotiations have not been halted entirely. They are continuing through intermediaries, suggesting there is still scope for an agreement. At the same time, the move has reportedly complicated efforts to reach a swift ceasefire.
It remains unclear what form the contacts have taken. While the Wall Street Journal reports that direct diplomacy has been suspended, the New York Times suggests that talks via Pakistan have also been halted.
