Macron: 15 countries preparing mission to secure Hormuz oil route
French President Emmanuel Macron has said that around 15 countries are preparing a coordinated mission to safeguard shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway is vital to global energy markets, with roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passing through it.
The initiative follows the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which Macron said has created an opportunity to stabilise the situation in the region.
France is expected to take the lead in what Macron described as a 'strictly defensive' operation, with planning to be coordinated with Iran.
Despite the recent de-escalation, Macron warned that the situation in Lebanon remains critical. Paris is therefore advocating for Lebanon to be included in a broader ceasefire framework.
According to the French president, efforts to stabilise the region will remain incomplete without addressing the situation in Lebanon.
