Lebanon Faces a Food Crisis as a Result of the War with Iran

Lebanon is facing a growing food crisis as the war with Iran disrupts the country’s supply of goods, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has said.

Tensions remain high despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Washington has accused Tehran of violating commitments in the Strait of Hormuz, while Israel has carried out strikes on Lebanon that Iran has described as a breach of the agreement.

"What we are seeing is no longer just a displacement crisis, it is rapidly turning into a food security crisis," said WFP country director Allison Oman.

She said food is becoming increasingly unaffordable due to rising prices and higher demand from displaced families. Many traders report having less than one week’s supply of staple foods.

Deliveries of humanitarian aid to southern areas are becoming more difficult. A WFP convoy took more than 15 hours this week to complete a journey that would normally take only a few hours.
