Amazon Ends Support for Older Kindle Devices
Amazon will end support for older Kindle devices, preventing users from downloading new titles from the Kindle store. The measure will affect devices released in 2012 or earlier and will take effect from 20 May 2026. An estimated two million users will be affected.
Users will still be able to read books they have already downloaded and access their libraries via mobile and desktop applications. Amazon has also offered discounts to active users to upgrade to newer devices. It warned that factory resetting may render some devices unusable.
The decision has drawn criticism from users, who say it could create waste on a large scale as the devices remain functional. Estimates suggest that more than 600 tonnes of electronic waste could be generated.
Analysts say older devices were designed for a different technological era and may not support newer services. Amazon said it has supported these models for at least 14 years
