Magyar Pledges Constitutional Reform After Election Win

Peter Magyar, whose Tisza party won a decisive election victory, has announced sweeping changes including constitutional amendments and a crackdown on corruption. He said the result reflected a clear public desire to anchor the country firmly in Europe after years of disputes with Brussels.

Magyar secured a two-thirds majority, giving him broad scope to advance rule of law reforms and potentially unlock billions of euros in European Union funding. He also pledged to amend the constitution to limit the prime minister to two terms. The new government, he said, aims to restore checks and balances and strengthen pluralist democracy.

Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who held office for 16 years, faced criticism over conflicts with Brussels and the suspension of EU funds. His supporters, however, emphasized his defense of national sovereignty and traditional values.

Magyar called for a swift transfer of power, saying voters had chosen a new direction for the country. He said restoring the rights of the Hungarian minority would be key to improving relations with Ukraine, which he described as a victim of the war. He also called Russia a security risk and ruled out contact with Vladimir Putin.

The incoming leader said he would seek to rebuild relations with Poland, deepen cooperation within the EU and guarantee the independence of public media. He also underlined the importance of strong nation-states within a functioning Union.
