EU Prepares Fuel Measures as Strait Tensions Hit Aviation
The European Union said it stands ready to coordinate the release of aviation fuel stocks if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist. A spokesperson said there is currently no threat of shortages in Europe, but the bloc is preparing for potential supply constraints.
Tensions in the region are already affecting the aviation sector. European airlines and regulators have warned of possible flight cancellations, aircraft groundings and disruption to the summer season, linked to fuel supply risks from the Middle East.
Iran has announced the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic following a ceasefire agreement. However, the United States plans to maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Shipping group Hapag-Lloyd has also said it will continue to avoid the Strait for now.
The EU said it is closely monitoring developments and that Iran’s move does not alter its current plans. It expects greater clarity in the coming week.
The option of releasing fuel stocks follows calls from the aviation sector. At the same time, the EU is preparing measures to optimise refinery capacity and mitigate the risk of a supply crisis.
