Trump Seeks to Accelerate Access to Psychedelic Treatment

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced plans to speed up access to medical research and treatments based on psychedelic substances.

He said he intends to sign an executive order directing the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to accelerate the review of substances such as ibogaine. US veterans’ organizations say the drug may help treat post-traumatic stress disorder.

Officials at an event in the Oval Office said the reforms could pave the way for reclassifying these substances into a different legal category following successful clinical trials. Trump also said the United States will allocate $50m for federal research into ibogaine.
