French UN Peacekeeper Killed in Attack on UNIFIL Troops in Lebanon

A French UN peacekeeper has been killed in an attack on soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), while three others were wounded, French President Emmanuel Macron said on X.

All indications point to the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah as being responsible for the attack. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the incident and pledged to pursue those responsible.

French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin said the soldiers were caught in an ambush during an operation to reopen access to a UNIFIL post that had been isolated for several days due to fighting in the region.

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been in place since overnight into Friday.
